The Unbound 200 is the biggest gravel race in the world and as such I have left no stone unturned in my pursuit of building the fastest bike possible for the race. Some of these equipment choices might shock you but data and testing including time in the wind tunnel are behind all of them and that's what I get into in this video. Hey Dylan, i haven't moved over to wax based lubes, but thinking having multiple chains waxed and ready, then swapping easily with quick links would be pretty time effective (allowing for multiple chain hot waxing with one prep). Making hot melt wax less of a chore is leveling this option with convenient liquid lubes that gives you the placebo peace of mind I get from doing my due diligence pre-ride chain lubing.

So how did you like those Pirelli tires? I recently saw them, im quite a Pirelli fan. I was thinking some 35's or 40's might be nice. Im mostly on road, some of it a bit sandy, I do like to get on trails too (dry conditions). I want the Pirelli name, but i dont want to feel like im sacrificing for it.

A PM (coupled with a HRM) will be useful if you want to compare/analyze the load of different training sessions while training in very different environments in a short period of time (hometrainer, higher altitude, different bikes, different tires, different temperature). If you train for days, like most of us, on the same routes, same weather, with the same type of training sessions, comparing the average speeds will be largely enough to assess the quality of your training. As such, a PM is above all a useful tool for....your online coach as the online coach doesn't know your circuits and usual training environment. If you're your own coach, you can make do without. So Dylan is an online coach, so of course, for him it's better to follow your training if you get a PM....

Every time I see a clipless vs flat. They both have thei pros and cons. Where flats seem to require less power and less power is produced (that is a weird sentence.). Clips have a higher required energy for the higher energy. Basically on hill climbs and level fields they produced the same effects. Meaning flats required less power over all to get almost the exact same stats but over all produced less power for a slower speed but would actually be close in time to the clipless. My theory is that flats require you to push THROUGH until you get every last bit of energy you can get to make the next leg push down to be easier. So it would need a higher start power force but be lower over a long distance while the clipless would need less energy to start up but require more energy over longer distances because you are no longer trying to get the max amount of angle in the pedal.

Good stuff, the protein can definatly be over done, I had a period in younger years where the gym was a second home instead of the road, aimed for 2g/kg and I did some tests thru out and 4 months some level of something in my liver was noot good, they asked if I drank alot of alcohol and I did none... So thats my two cents, sorry about the commas 😂

I know other channels have done videos on this, but I'd be really interested in hearing you talk about clipping in versus riding flat pedals, talking about both the science and just your own personal experience (and perhaps also including considerations like the difference it makes it a route requires getting off the bike and running at times).

To me this continues to be entertaining content. Hopefully one day people will have drones and ear pieces to communicate with coaches. Not that I wanna see the Tour de France style bike riding but if Dylan had at least two other guys that would do work for him he would be a contender for 1st next year. That being said I’d love to see some more fluidly in the feed zones. Sofia’s viral pit stop last year was spot on how it should be. Stay hungry Dylan, I believe you’ll be on the podium next year. Your gear was exactly what was needed and knowing the course from this year will make a huge difference.

I recently bought a '06 trek 1500 wsd, IDC if it's womens the colors amazing and it fits surprisingly well for me being 6'2. I ride about 6 miles everyday to and from work and on my ride home it's usually very late at night, where there isn't much traffic, giving me the option for a time trial. When I first got the bike I was doing about 20 minutes racing back. Ive known aerodynamics for a long time but I finally thought I'd start trying the positions, being my first road bike from xc/hybrid bikes I tried it, and raced a sub 15 minute run hitting 35 and avg of 20. After I set that new pb I've been using aero tucks and stuff a lot more even on casual rides. And bare in mind I got that bike for a deal of $200 and ride flats, a shirt, shorts and backpack, the difference it's gonna make when I upgrade to cycling kit...

This is a very helpful video. The only complication can be other events in life (especially family life during summer months when kids have activities at weekends), and also it is often necessary to spend a day or so travelling to major sportives and on the travel days it isn’t usually practical to have normal or sometimes any cycling. Hence some pragmatism required, but I guess it’s the principles that matter - trying to keep high intensity interval sessions but lower volume in the days before the big A race event

Sooooooooo. It depends what kind of athlete you are. Low carb is possible if you want to do RAAM or ultra endurance. Between Unbound and crit intensity, you’re going to be highly anaerobic and need to be carbing pretty hard to support that training. If you want to be a short distance track cyclist or just want to get strong in the gym and bust out high intensity squats and recover well, then focusing on protein will be useful. Also not all protein is the same, pea protein will require higher dosages to hit the threshold of the muscle recovery triggering amino acids: leucine, proline and alanine. Beef has a large percentage of these, plants, sadly, do not.

It is interesting. I am relatively good runner, but pretty bad cyclist. (although I train running more...) So to say running 15 km/h for 1-3 hours is not great for me, but same time with the speed 40 km/h on bike is far beyond my imagination. I think it is partially due to lack of muscle power, in running you don't need that much power, but in cycling there is simple ratio between harder gears and speed.
